5. Silas Kiptanui’s Huge Kick to Win at Pre-Nats
While the Tulane Green Wave’s prized pupil has become famous for sporting a baseball cap as he races, but Silas Kiptanui ditched any theatrics this weekend when he competed in the The 2026 Under Armour Pre-National Invitational.
Kiptuani ran as part of a front pack that included Notre Dame’s Daelen Ackley, teammate Bernard Cheruiyot and a pair of Wichita State Shockers. Following his runner-up performance in the NCAA Steeple final last season, Kiptuani pushed harder to ensure a victory at Pre-Nats.
The Kenyan unleashed his kick from way out, starting to pull ahead of the group around 700m out from the finish line. As he slowed down around the final 100m, Ackley and the Shockers closed in, but Kiptunai did enough to win by 1.4 seconds with a time of 23:17.4.
4. Lemi Berhanu Wins Amsterdam Marathon With a PB
As Buze Diriba pushed the women’s race to new heights, fellow Ethiopian Lemi Berhanu nearly pulled off the same feat on the men’s side. Berhanu competed in a relatively strong field in the typically quieter Amsterdam Marathon, including Nicholas Kiprorir, who won the World Half Marathon silver in September.
The men’s race became a battle of green eagerness and maven savvy, as Kiprorir – competing in only his second ever marathon – pushed three-time Amsterdam Marathon veteran Berhanu all the way to the line.
Once Berhanu had established himself as the front man, Geofry Kipchumba’s course record of 2:03:30 was in reach. Berhanu wasn’t able to close the gap enough to snatch the record, but he finished at 2:03:33, winning the Amsterdam Marathon for the first time in his third attempt.
3. Marcelo Mantecon Sets Florida High School XC Record
Marcelo Mantecon announced himself as a looming threat within the high school cross country ranks with a terrific performance at the New World Fall Spectacular. At a time when the 2026 Brooks XC Championships presented by Fleet Feet are on the horizon and he was just handed one of the coveted Fleet Feet Golden Tickets, Marcelo Mantceon is suddenly a name to watch in the national competition.
The Belen Jesuit senior provided fans with a historic performance in the New World Fall Spectacular, dominating the elite 5k in 14:24.00 to set a new course record and Florida all-time cross country 5k record. Mantecon lowered his own mark by nine seconds and won by 26 seconds.
On top of his performance, Belen Jesuit swept the podium, putting them in a strong position heading into the FHSAA State series. Teammates Armando Cruz and Jack Michalak also finished within the top-20 all-time Florida performances this weekend.
2. Buze Diriba Sets Meet Record at Amsterdam Marathon
Buze Diriba stood out amongst a group of talented Ethiopians who took control of the women’s race of the Amsterdam Marathon. Part of a group that included last year’s winner Aynalem Desta, Diriba began to stand out when she sped up her pace past the colorful flora of Vondelpark at the 40k mark.
In her Amsterdam Marathon debut, Diriba smoked the course record of the Platinum Label by 41 seconds. Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s 2024 record of 2:16:52, was easily trounced by Diriba’s 2:16:12, which also saw her improve her personal best by over three minutes.
The Amsterdam win was the latest in what’s been a strong season for the 32-year-old Diriba that saw a half marathon win in May, which was preceded by podium finishes in both the Daegu Marathon and the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.
1. Hannah Gapes’ Course Record at Pre-Nats
Hannah Gapes has her eyes set on keeping the NCAA Cross Country Championship in Raleigh, North Carolina, for the second straight year, and if Pre-Nats were any indication she remains at the front of the Wolfpack.
Hot off the heels of an ACC Player of the Week after dominating the Joe Piane Invitational, Gapes laid waste to the 2026 Under Armour Pre-National Invitational. She won the 6k blue race, finishing in just 18:57.6, setting a brand new LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course record.
Along with Katy Zang and Brighter Jepchumba, Gapes shaved almost half a minute off the previous record, an 18-year-old mark set by former Olympic Silver medallist Sally Kipyego. Gapes became the first woman to break the 19-minute mark at the famous LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
