The West was won by Stanford on Nov. 10 at the 2023 NCAA Division I West Regional Cross Country meet. 

The Cardinal swept the men's and women's race and will be headed to Charlottesville, Virginia for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

Stanford started the day by winning the women's race and ended it by watching men's runner Ky Robinson beat out Portland runner Matt Strangio by about four seconds to win the men's race. Robinson won with a time of 28 minutes and 55.6 seconds. 

The Cardinal had three runners finish in the top 10 of the race. 

Meanwhile, Gonzaga will join Stanford in the men's race after a second-place finish. 

Oregon State Cross Country Runner Kaylee Mitchell Wins West Region

Kaylee Mitchell of Oregon State won the NCAA West Regional Cross Country race on Nov. 10 and will be headed to Charlottesville, Virginia for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship on Nov. 18. 

Mitchell won with a time of 19 minutes and 8.4 seconds to beat Greta Karinauskaite of California Baptist University by four seconds. Oregon State will also send third-place finisher Grace Fetherstonhaugh to Virginia. 

But neither Oregon State nor CBU won the region as Stanford took the title followed by Oregon.

How Do Teams, Runners Qualify For NCAA D1 Cross Country National Championship?

For men's and women's, the top two teams in each regional — there are nine in total — automatically qualify for the championships, which equates to 18 automatic qualifiers. 

The NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee will then choose 13 at-large teams to fill out the 31 team field.

Individually,  the first four finishers who do not belong to an automatic qualifier or an at-large team automatically advance to the championships. All four finishers have to finish in the top 25 within their region. Altogether, 36 individuals automatically qualify and two are chosen at-large, making 38 the grand total. The two at-large selections are the highest placing individuals at a regional that were not automatic qualifiers.
