In a thrilling break, Tigst Assefa won the 2025 London Marathon over Joyciline Jepkosgei, setting the women's-only marathon world record in the process.

Tigst Assefa Wins the 2025 London Marathon in a Women's-Only World Record

We have a new world record at the 2025 London Marathon.

Originally billed as an Olympic rematch for the ages between 2024 Olympic silver and gold medallists, Tgist Assefa and Sifan Hassan, the two racers blazed through 10K early along with Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya.

It was Assefa who emerged victorious, taking the prestigious London title in 2:15:50. Her time surpassed Peres Jepchirchir's women's-only world record set at the previous year's race.

The trio came through 5K in 15:34 along with Ethiopia's Megertu Alemu, running a blistering 2:11 marathon pace albeit downhill. The pace slowed from there as Alemu fell off, leaving just Assefa, Hassan, and Jepkosgei.

Hassan began to play her usual mind games, yo-yoing around the field and moving back and forth just as she did before her Paris 2024 Olympic win. But at some point, her 10-second gap behind Assefa and Jepkosgei became a 26-second gap, and then became a 70-second gap as it was clear that either Assefa or Jepkosgei would be your winner.

Assefa put the hammer down a little after 35K, splitting a 5:03 mile to break Jepkosgei and take the title.
