It's not too often that you see so many eyes on a 'C' heat.

But at the 2025 Sound Running Track Fest, spectators had their eyes glued to the track in anticipation of 2021 Olympic 800m champ Athing Mu's debut pro race of 2025. Her racing schedule this year under coach Bobby Kersee has been unconventional to say the least.

Beginning with a controlled 3K pacing job, she then won a 1500m race by about a minute at two different collegiate meets so far. And despite entering in the 'C' heat, the Track Fest would be Mu's first race against professionals this year, and her second pro race since her tragic fall at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials that resulted in her not being selected for the Paris Olympic team.

Mu and the rest of the field let the pacer run away early, splitting around 68 seconds for the first 400m in 5th place. It started to string out shortly after that, and Mu shot to the outside but didn't really start moving up yet. It was 1:56 at 700m just before the pacer stepped out. Atlanta TC's Gabrielle Wilkinson took the lead and began to control the race.

Mu continued to bide her time through 1100m, hitting the bell at 3:04 mid with 67.3 third lap. Wilkinson tried her best to hold on to the lead and Mu made her final move with 150m to go. With Wilkinson fading, now it was between Swoosh TC's Sadie Sargent and Mu.

Who would take it? It was Sargent who pulled away with 50m to go, winning in 4:10.01. Mu's runner-up position was secured, running 4:10.70.

What does it all mean? Although Mu surprised to place 2nd at USAs in the 1500m in 2023 with a 4:03 best, it's no secret that the 1500m isn't her main event.

Mu knows more than all of her competition what she's capable of at her best, and she's got plenty of time before the U.S. championships and the Prefontaine Classic where she's been announced as part of the 800m pro field.

Only Mu and her coach Kersee truly know if today was a success according to their goals, and she might be the one looking back at the end of the season knowing that she did what she had to do.
