Boston Marathon champion Des Linden will race this fall's New York City Marathon, NYRR announced today.

“Breaking the tape at this year’s Boston Marathon was a lifelong dream come true,” Linden said to NYRR. “At the moment, it felt like it was the culmination of my career, but I believe I still have plenty more to give to the marathon. I’m thrilled to head to the TCS New York City Marathon this fall. I’m motivated to get back on the big stage that NYRR will undoubtedly put together and intend to make a name for myself in another great city.”

Linden's victory at this April's Boston Marathon ended a 33-year title drought for American women at the world's oldest marathon race. It also marked her first-ever major marathon victory after recording two runner-up finishes (Chicago 2010, Boston 2011).

The two-time Olympian has raced New York just once before—a fifth-place, 2:28:11 finish in 2014.

This will be Linden's first marathon race unattached to the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project; she had trained with the Michigan-based group since 2005 before announcing her departure last week

Countrywoman Shalane Flanagan made history at last year's edition of the New York City Marathon, as she became the first American woman in 40 years to win the storied race—her first world major marathon victory.

Flanagan said before New York that she would retire if she won, but ultimately postponed her retirement in one last effort to win her hometown race, the Boston Marathon, in April. Poor weather conditions affected many of the top athletes there, including Flanagan, who finished seventh overall.

Since then, Flanagan has not made an announcement regarding her retirement and it stands to reason that, if healthy, she may return to New York to defend her title.
